The John Scofield Band - Up All Night (2003) JAZZ | MP3 | 320 KBPS | 141 MBS ![]() Amazon.com Already a part of two great jazz records in 2003--by Roy Haynes and the group ScoLoHoFo--guitarist John Scofield is back to his genre-bending self with 11 tracks of adventurous grooves that should attract contemporary jazz fans as well as lovers of jam bands, instrumental hip-hop, and dance music. Although the quartet collaborated on nearly half the tunes, Up All Night is more structured than Uberjam, the Scofield band's 2002 effort. It's less a jam session, more a rhythmic showcase for the group and the special dirty effects, memorable riffs, and long darting lines of the leader. The head-bopping, finger-snapping quotient is high on many numbers, especially the first two tracks and "Four on the Floor." "Thikhahali," his tribute to Fela Kuti's Afrobeat style, is priceless. There are go-go riffs on "Philopiety," industrial beats on "Freakin' Disco" and "Every Night Is Ladies Night" and through it all a musician at the very top of his game. --Mark Ruffin 1. It was a huge success in Denmark, But the album was never released internationaly. However the track 2 Kissing" was compiled on more than 30 compilations and the two singles "Dunia and "The Suns Of Afterlife" as limited 10 inches was released international. So the international appeal is out there, and Bliss has become one of the true chill-out undergrounds classics. From Mixmaster Morris to Buddah Bars Ravin, from Chris Coco to lenny Ibizarre, they have all enjoyed the blissful soundscapes of one of Denmarks bestselling chill-out acts. And even lovers of the American TV series CSI will no doubt remember the beats of this fantastic band. Now, Marc-george, Steffen, Tchando, Alexandra are ready to meet the world with the lastest international release entitled " Quiet letters", which include some of the finest moments from "Afterlife" plus recordings from the past 2 years, which they just couldn`t keep to themselves anymore. During those long sessions and recording time, they managed to get hold of one their favorite voices: Sophie barker from Zero 7. Today you will find a highly internatinal album, which makes you think of Massive Attack meets Sade. With the vibes of Morricone opening track "Sleep Will Come" from "Quiet letters" is an open space created with musical flair for tradition, and beautiful sense of beauty ambience. Calm, Quietly it folds into dreamy and peaceful piece of music, that makes you far beyond the beaches of Ibiza, on a travel into african soul, Scandinavian coolness and love. Balearic, Classically and mysterious...... it is from here Bliss invited you to enjoy the very experienced in Scandinavian sound, Bliss as well has this melancholic performance on the album, when you hear Sophie Barkerґs voice on the track "Breathe" ... it honestly, takes you away. Boney James - Sweet Thing 1998
SMOOTH JAZZ | WAV | 459 MBS ![]() This column hereby nominates Boney James to replace Kenny G as the posterboy for smooth jazz. The multi-saxman is not only one of the genre's top sellers, but also most consistently captures the requisite balance of silky, urban-lite grooves, bright yet easygoing melodic horn licks and - most importantly as far as definition is concerned - improvises effectively enough for "jazz" to be an appropriate term for what he does. Bluntly speaking, he's more diverse, more soulful and less grating and repetitive than the G man. James' fourth non-holiday disc, Sweet Thing finds him and co-producer Paul Brown up to their old irresistible tricks, texturing subtle hints of Earth, Wind & Fire flavored horns, David Torkanowsky's vibes, Peter White's accordian, even a Moog and Wurlitzer to capture a laid back classic soul feeling. The title track, in fact, is a tasteful cover of a classic Rufus hit from the era, featuring the song's co-writer, Tony Maiden, on guitar. James's fluffy, happy jazz titles - "Nothin' but Love," "It's All Good," "Innocence" - seem, however, too superficial and simple to represent tunes that dig this deep emotionally and feature impressive solos which turn even the catchiest pop tune away from strict cliche. They reflect James' lighthearted approach, yet tell little of the spiritual points beyond the smile. Al Jarreau voice adds a touch of class and sensuality to "I Still Dream." -- Review by Jonathan ~ TRACKLIST ~ 01. East Bay [05:18] 02. Nothin' But Love [05:03] 03. Words (Unspoken) [04:36] 04. Beatle Jazz - Another Bite Of The Apple 2001 JAZZ | MP3 | 320 KBPS | 116 MB ![]() At a recent gig I was on, a jazz aficionado friend of mine told me about a band called Beatlejazz, and directed me to a site where I could find out more information. What a treat I was in for. As a professional musician and Beatles fan, I was delighted to hear the sound clips and then buy the new Beatlejazz album aptly named "Another Bite of The Apple." I was hooked immediately; it really taps into the essence of the Beatles adding a great jazz flavor to it. These all-star jazz greats really know how to combine the best of the Beatles and jazz on such classic tracks as "Magical Mystery Tour", "Let it Be", "Blackbird", and "I'll Follow The Sun". This album is one of the best I have heard for crossing-over two genres of musical styles and flavors. It is a must have if you are even remotely into the Beatles, and a must for jazz listeners.~~~Bob Biz, Customer Review [Dirty's Note] - Although I essentially agree with Bob's review, this CD is not surprising nor very exciting. It's a good mellow, moody listen. If you're a jazz fan it's worth the download. 01. I'll Follow The Sun 02. Here There And Everywhere 03. Let It Be 04. Give Me Love 05. Michelle 06. John Coltrane - Black Pearls (XRCD) JAZZ | WAV | CUE | LOG | SCANS | 418MB | 38:57 JVC 1997 ![]() As is often the case with an artist as prolific as John Coltrane, not every release can be considered as essential. Black Pearls seems a bit ambiguous when placed in a more historical context. It was only three days later that Coltrane participated not as a leader, but rather a member, of the Miles Davis Sextet that recorded "Stella By Starlight" and "On Green Dolphin Street." There is an obvious disparity between these three mostly improvised and lengthy jams and the Davis session. This is in no way to insinuate that Coltrane's performance is anything less than par. Black Pearls indeed captures Coltrane at the height of perfecting the intense volley that would garner the name "sheets of sound." Featuring Donald Byrd (trumpet) and the Red Garland Trio -- Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Art Taylor (drums) -- this is the same quintet that had mightily contributed to Lush Life and The Believers, as well as The Last Trane. This session would be their last together. The title track is a mid-tempo bop number that quite frankly fails to make a great melodic impact. It's not until Coltrane's indomitable solo that a direction is found and, for a short while, remains focused. Once the reins are passed to Byrd, Garland, Chambers, and to a lesser extent Taylor, the song meanders through some fairly vapid changes. Fortunately, the soloing from Byrd is more direct and is able to build and support Coltrane's equally impressive display. The difference is immeasurable as no holds are barred from Garland or Taylor -- who is arguably at his prime. All told, this performance is well worth the price of admission. At 18-plus minutes, "Sweet Sapphire Blues" (penned by Prestige Records owner Robert Weinstock) is the longest track on Black Pearls. It is in essence a 12-bar blues jam. Coltrane's double- and triple-time solo is primal within this setting. The overemphatic backbeat allows for more group interaction, yielding a full and well-rounded union among the musicians that was sadly absent from the opening track. ~ Lindsay Planner, All Music Guide ~ TRACKLISTING ~ 1. George Benson Breezin' [Direct Rip] ![]() Tracklist 1. Breezin' 2. This Masquerade 3. Six to Four 4. Affirmation 5. So This Is Love? 6. Lady WAV 393MB Part 1: http://rapidshare.com/files/19416737..._WAV.part1.rar Part 2: http://rapidshare.com/files/19415964..._WAV.part2.rar PASS: BLAQ_SYNCITI.NET Review All of a sudden, George Benson became a pop superstar with this album, thanks to its least representative track. Most of Breezin' is a softer-focused variation of Benson's R&B/jazz-flavored CTI work, his guitar as assured and fluid as ever with Claus Ogerman providing the suave orchestral backdrops and his crack then-working band (including Ronnie Foster on keyboards and sparkplug Phil Upchurch on rhythm guitar) pumping up the funk element. Yet it is the sole vocal track (his first in many years), Leon Russell's "This Masquerade" — where George unveiled his new trademark, scatting along with a single-string guitar solo — that reached number ten on the pop singles chart and drove the album all the way to number one on the pop LP chart. The attractive title track also became a minor hit single, although Gabor Szabo's 1971 recording with composer Bobby Womack is even more fetching. In the greater scheme of Benson's career, Breezin' is really not so much a breakthrough as it is a transition album; the guitar is still the core of his identity. All Music Guide, Richard S. Ginell Biography by Richard S. Ginell George Benson is simply one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history, but he is also an amazingly versatile musician, and that frustrates to no end critics who would paint him into a narrow bop box. He can play in just about any style — from swing to bop to R&B to pop — with supreme taste, a beautiful rounded tone, terrific speed, a marvelous sense of logic in building solos, and, always, an unquenchable urge to swing. His inspirations may have been Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery — and he can do dead-on impressions of both — but his style is completely his own. Not only can he play lead brilliantly, he is also one of the best rhythm guitarists around, supportive to soloists and a dangerous swinger, particularly in a soul-jazz format. Grover Washington Jr. - Inside Moves/Paradise JAZZ | WAV | CUE | LOG | COVERS | 823MB | 79:46 Collectables 2004 ![]() In 2004, the Collectables label paired two of Grover Washington's albums -- 1979's Paradise and 1984's Inside Moves -- and reissued them on one disc. Choosing to combine these two releases makes little sense, mostly because Washington released a handful of dates (for Motown and Elektra) in between them. Neither album was particularly effective upon release, and they haven't held up particularly well. Paradise, his first for Elektra, is a straight-ahead crossover set that's very of its time. By the time of Inside Moves, Washington was riding on the fumes from the success of 1980s Winelight; although he's assisted by the great Jon Lucien, the material is tepid across the board. ~ Andy Kellman ~ TRACKLISTING ~ 01. Guru by himself wouldn't get posted here, but when you consider that he had cats like Roy Hargrove, Ronny Jordan, Branford Marsalis and Ramsey Lewis on some many of those cuts plus so many others, PLUS potential jazz vocalists like Erykah Badu and N'Dea Davenport, that's why I'd call it "jazz". |

Yep, yep. That's what I meant. I should've been more specific. I definitely wouldn't post Gangstarr in here. I have a Lionel Richie CD that has some jazz-sounding cuts but I wouldn't post that either. I don't really have any jazz, maybe 5 albums.

Sadao Watanabe - Viajando
JAZZ | FLAC | CUE | COVERS | 353MB | 62:59 IMS 1999 ![]() Recorded in the winter of 1999 in New York City, Viajando finds Sadao Watanabe musically warming things up with a group of his friends from south of the border. Most notable are Cesar Mariano on keyboards, Paulo Braga on drums and Romero Lubambo on guitar. Add funky latin percussionist to the mix and you have an album that simmers no matter where you might find yourself listening to it. On occasion, Watanabe introduces a few vocalists who manage to further add smoke to this simmering smooth jazz stew. The best tracks are the ones where Watanabe plays sopranino, most notably "Afrozil", "On a Sunny Day" and the instrumental version of "Doco Seducao". Being around so many of his friends must have made for jam sessions that were great fun since they produced a more laid back sound that presents a more relaxed version of Sadao Watanabe. ~ RunawaySlave, BGOL.com ~ TRACKLISTING ~ 01.
